ST GEORGE’S HALL by chris kelly and brian starkey, retired
The foundation stone of St Georges Hall was laid in 1838 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria. However the building of the hall did not start until 1842.
The hall was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes and comprised of a concert hall together with the law courts (Crown Courts). It opened in 1854.
The hall has held famous trials such as, “The Julia Wallace murder” (1931) and “The Cameo Cinema murder” (1949).
Many were condemned to death at this court and it remained operable as a Crown Court until 1984.
The Crown Court is presently located at, Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts, Derby Square.
