Serena Kennedy

Serena Kennedy started her Police career as a Constable in GMP (Greater Manchester Police).

She has had a varied career, starting out in Neighbourhood Policing as a Constable with GMP and working her way up to the rank of Inspector.

In 2008 she was promoted to Detective Chief Inspector with the Major Incident Team where she led teams of Detectives investigating some of the most serious crimes such as murders. She saw first-hand the devastating impact violent crime had on the loved ones of victims and the wider community, and she was passionate about supporting families and putting offenders before the courts.

In 2010 she moved from being a Detective back into a uniformed role as Superintendent in charge of partnerships and local policing in Moss Side and Longsight in Manchester. Two years later she returned to the Serious Crime Division as Detective Superintendent until being transferred on promotion to Cheshire Constabulary as Head of Public Protection.

There, she helped introduce a new, more integrated approach with partners who had the shared goal of intervening early to help prevent people from going down the wrong path into a life of crime.

She has maintained links with lots of people in GMP, Cheshire and the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit because she loved coaching and mentoring people through their careers, as she herself benefited from that support.

In 2016 Serena joined Merseyside Police as Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) from Cheshire Constabulary.

In 2018 she was appointed as Deputy Chief Constable (DCC) of Merseyside Police.

On 12th April 2021 Serena became the first female Chief Constable in the history of policing on Merseyside.

In July 2023, Serana became the first Merseyside police officer to receive the King’s Police Medal (KPM) for gallantry and distinguished service.

Serena Kennedy grew up in Ormskirk and she sees Merseyside as her home. She is married to a retired Police Officer and she has a stepson, two daughters and two grandchildren.
