Buckingham Palace
Liverpool City Police Cadets receiving the D of E Gold Award from HRH, Prince Phillip at Buckingham Palace in 1962. They were the first to do so.
The “cadets” above in civillian clothes were aged 19yrs and had already been “appointed” as a Constable. I can identify a few:
L – R – Dai Thomas – Mike Bramwell – ? – ? – ? – Frank Kite – ? – John Evans – ? – Stacey – JWT – ? – ? – ? – Ron Emery – ? – ?
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Award was no cakewalk . Instructors Sgt John Edwards and Dougie Mackay dragged us all over the country in the cold and wet for years – through Bronze and Silver awards. Not completing wasn’t an option. Sgt Edwards was a big influence on my police and civilian life, a big man at 6’4″. He taught me to stand up straight for once in my life. I met him again, by chance, in the 1980’s in London. I had a restaurant which I took him to and treated him for lunch. He had retired and was employed as a tour guide in Liverpool. He was an ex guardsman who pointed the way for many cadets. He didn’t hold back from ticking me off, even then, for my long hair and beard !!
